Reflexology is based on the concept that reflex areas on your feet and hands represent every part of your body. Bodily systems can be thrown out of balance by varying factors such as illness, stress or diet and the resulting imbalances can prevent the body from working at optimum performance.

A properly trained reflexologist can detect these imbalances and using a specialised technique will work all reflexes on the foot to induce relaxation and stimulate your body's own healing processes to achieve balance and harmony.

Why Choose Reflexology

It offers a safe, non-invasive and effective solution to help many conditions in a relaxing and supportive environment. Because it is a complementary therapy reflexology can be used alongside other complementary therapies and conventional medical treatments.

A qualified reflexologist will have been trained to help you identify practises which may trigger recurring conditions, enabling you to treat the cause and not just the symptoms.

How does it work?

Reflexology is based on the idea that energy flows around the body. When this energy is free flowing we are healthy, balanced, and living in harmony with our environment on a mental, spiritual and physical level, if this energy flow becomes blocked illness can result.

Our bodies have the amazing ability to heal themselves given the right environment, a reflexology treatment aims to clear energy blockages, promote deep relaxation, and improve blood and lymph circulation so allowing the body to heal itself.

History

Ancient history indicates that reflexology was originally practised in Egypt, India and China.

Around 2330 BC the tomb of Ankhmahor was built in Egypt and a wall painting thought to show men practising reflexology can still be seen in the pyramid.

Reflexology as we know it today began as a theory called Zone Therapy, conceived by Dr. William Fitzgerald in the early 1900s. He initially discovered that pressure on specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetising effect on a related area. Developing this theory he divided the body into ten equal vertical zones which ended in the fingers and toes and concluded that pressure in one part of a zone could affect everything else in that zone.

Eunice Ingham, took the concept further and refined zone therapy into reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology has continued to evolve and is now widely used in hospitals in China and many European companies now have reflexologists on staff to combat stress in the workplace.
