Fungal Nail Home Remedies

Fungal Nail can sometimes be treated at home or through medication from the GP however attending a Chiropodist or Podiatrist appointment would be beneficial if the fungal is severe or not clearing up. Before you start any treatment Purefeet would always recommend taking a photo of the nails so you can compare before and after treatments, Sometimes treatments can take a long time to work. Below we have listed some remedies for Fungal, please note this is information only and used at your own risk.

Available on in Egham and Staines Vicks VapoRub has with Camphor and Eucalyptus oil has proven very successful in improving or defeating toenail fungus according to a 2011 Study  using an emery board to scratch the nail each night gently rubbing a pea size Vicks VapoRub into the nail.

1. Vicks VapoRub

2. Tee tree oil

Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil derived from the leaves of the tea tree plant. It is known for its antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular natural remedy for treating fungal nail infections and can easily be purchased in the Staines and Egham areas.

When applied to the affected nail, tea tree oil works by penetrating the nail and reaching the fungal infection underneath. It then works to kill off the fungus, stopping it from spreading and promoting the growth of healthy nail tissue. Tea tree oil has been shown to help reduce inflammation and redness in the affected area, providing relief from discomfort and pain associated with fungal nail infections.

To use tea tree oil for treating fungal nail infections, it is important to dilute the oil with a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, to prevent skin irritation. Apply the diluted tea tree oil to the affected nail and surrounding skin using a cotton swab or brush. Repeat this process 2-3 times daily for several weeks until the infection has cleared up. Remember to take photos.

3. Vineger

Maybe an old wives tail - I have had some people inform me of success with this one. Soaking feet for 20 mins should should be ample providing a safe home remedy.

4. Diet

While a healthy diet alone cannot cure a fungal nail infection, it can play a role in supporting the body's immune system and helping to prevent the infection from spreading or recurring.

One way that diet can help with fungal nail infections is by boosting the body's intake of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients help to strengthen the immune system and support healthy nail growth.

Avoiding certain foods and beverages that can promote the growth of fungi can help to prevent the development of fungal nail infections. This includes foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, as well as alcohol and caffeine. These substances can disrupt the body's natural balance and create an environment that is conducive to fungal growth.

It is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This helps to flush out toxins from the body and maintain healthy nail growth.

While diet alone cannot completely cure a fungal nail infection, incorporating a healthy and balanced diet as part of a comprehensive treatment plan can help to support the body's healing process and prevent the infection from recurring.

5. Mouthwash

Mouthwash is not typically used to treat fungal nail infections, as it is designed for oral hygiene and not topical application. Fungal nail infections are typically treated with antifungal medications, either oral or topical, that are specifically formulated to target the fungus that causes the infection.

However, some people who use mouthwash as a home remedy to treat fungal nail infections. This is because some types of mouthwash contain antifungal agents such as menthol, thymol, or eucalyptol, which may help to kill the fungus causing the infection. These ingredients have been shown to have some antifungal activity in laboratory studies, but their effectiveness for treating fungal nail infections is not well established. I feel most Chiropodist would stay clear from this one.

6. Garlic

Simple: Garlic has anti fungal properties great to use if you also hunt vampires. However I am not aware of any foot professionals or chiropodist who use this.

What ones best

Some of the above treatments sound great for treating fungal nail, we all would love to have garlic shoved into our shoes while pouring mouthwash over out toes. Treatments can take a long time to work as we normally cant treat and infected nail and tend to stop it spreading to new nail growth. Remember it can take up to a year for a nail to completely grow out meaning you will need 365 cloves of garlic. Maybe you should speak to a Chiropodist in regards to the best treatments available as everyone has different needs and stages of infection.

Below I have highlighted recommendations a Foot professional or chiropodist may advise to treat fungal nail

1. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy for fungal nail, also known as laser fungal nail treatment, is a non-invasive and painless procedure that uses focused light energy to penetrate the nail and target the fungus that causes the infection.

During the treatment, a specialized laser device is used to emit a concentrated beam of light energy into the affected nail. The light energy penetrates the nail and heats the fungal cells, causing them to die off. This process also helps to stimulate the growth of healthy nail tissue.

Laser therapy for fungal nail typically requires multiple sessions, depending on the severity of the infection and the size of the affected area. The treatment sessions are usually spaced out over a period of several weeks or months to allow time for the nail to heal and for new, healthy nail tissue to grow.

Laser therapy for fungal nail has been shown to be effective in treating fungal nail infections, with some studies reporting success rates of up to 80% some claiming 95%. However, it is important to note that not all cases of fungal nail infections may be suitable for laser therapy.

How much does laser therapy cost

laser therapy can cost as little at £100 per treatment and up to £1500 prices vary depending on location and of course the amount of nails to be treated, make sure you ring around for quotes.

How long does laser treatment take

laser treatment for fungal is very quick around 30 seconds per nail and does not require bandaging after however you will most likely be required to return for follow up treatments ranging from 3-5 treatments on average.

 Does Laser treatment hurt

No, its safe and pain free and should not cause any discomfort.

2. Oral Medication

Oral fungal medications are medications that are taken by mouth to treat fungal infections in the body and feet. These medications are also known as systemic antifungal medications because they work throughout the body to kill or stop the growth of the fungus causing the infection.

There are several types of oral fungal medications, including azoles, echinocandins, and polyenes. Azoles are the most commonly prescribed oral antifungal medications and work by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes. Echinocandins work by disrupting the fungal cell wall, while polyenes bind to the fungal cell membrane and disrupt its structure, ultimately causing cell death.

The specific type of oral antifungal medication prescribed will depend on the type of fungal infection, the severity of the infection, the patient's overall health, and any other medications the patient may be taking. Oral fungal medications are generally prescribed for more severe or systemic fungal infections, such as candidiasis, as opposed to topical antifungal medications which are used for localized infections like athlete's foot or jock itch.

Oral antifungal medications can have side effects, which may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and can affect the liver and kidneys. When prescribed by the GP (chiropodist and foot health professionals will not prescribe) you should be offered a blood test every 6months to check liver and kidney function to determine arise of issues.

Oral Medication can be successful for some people but do think if it  the right option for you before proceeding considering the side affects.

3. Over the counter medication

In the UK, there are many over-the-counter fungal nail treatments available that can be purchased without a prescription. These treatments typically come in the form of topical solutions or creams that are applied directly to the affected nail on a regular basis and can range from a couple of pounds to £100's not considering purchasing again if more treatment is needed.

One commonly available OTC fungal nail treatment in the UK is amorolfine, which is available in a topical nail lacquer form. Amorolfine works by inhibiting the growth of the fungi causing the infection, and is generally used to treat mild to moderate fungal nail infections.

Another OTC option in the UK is tea tree oil, which is a natural antifungal agent that has been shown to be effective against certain types of fungi. Tea tree oil is available as a topical solution or cream, and can be applied directly to the affected nail.

Other OTC fungal nail treatments in the UK may include topical antifungal creams containing active ingredients such as clotrimazole or miconazole, or herbal remedies containing ingredients such as eucalyptus oil or garlic.

It is important to note that while OTC fungal nail treatments can be effective in treating mild to moderate infections, and may advertise 2 weeks then cured, this is not the case.

Fungal can take years to treat with the strongest of medications if you have a large infection. if a very small portion of the nail is infected then it can be as soon as a week to be cleared.

Always consider how mush of the nail is infected, you don't want to be spending £30 every 2 weeks for the next year for treatment.

How did I catch fungal nail

Fungal nail infections, also known as onychomycosis, are caused by a variety of fungi, including dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds. These fungi are found in warm, moist environments such as public swimming pools, locker rooms, and communal showers.

Fungal nail infections can occur when fungi enter the nail bed through small cuts or separations between the nail and the nail bed. They can also occur when fungi enter the skin around the nail, which can then spread to the nail itself.

Certain factors can increase the risk of developing a fungal nail infection. These include:

  • Having a weakened immune system - if left untreated the fungal nail is more likely to spread to the skin and other parts of the body making illness more severe.

  • Having diabetes -  High blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can also create a more favourable environment for fungal growth. Additionally, diabetic neuropathy, a condition where nerve damage occurs as a result of high blood sugar levels, can cause decreased sensation in the feet, making it more difficult to detect injuries or infections, including fungal nail infections. Treat as soon as possible.

  • Being over the age of 60 - As we age our immunity may not be as good meaning infection may spread.

  • Having a family history of fungal nail infections

  • Having a history of athlete's foot or other fungal skin infections

  • Having a history of nail injury or damage

  • Wearing tight shoes or shoes that do not allow proper ventilation

  • Having sweaty feet

  • Walking barefoot in public areas such as pools, locker rooms, or communal showers

Prevention of fungal nail infections involves keeping feet clean and dry, wearing clean socks and shoes that fit well and allow proper ventilation, and avoiding walking barefoot in public areas. If you suspect that you have a fungal nail infection, it is important to seek treatment promptly to prevent the infection from spreading and becoming more difficult to treat.
