Bunions and Shoe Pressure: Small Changes That Can Make Walking Easier

A bunion is a change in the alignment of the big-toe joint, often seen as a bony-looking prominence on the inside of the foot. Not every bunion is painful. For many people, the daily problem is something simpler: shoes rub on the bump and the surrounding skin becomes sore.

You may find yourself buying a larger shoe size, avoiding certain pairs or taking your shoes off as soon as you get home. Rather than assuming that a bunion needs an elaborate product, start with how your footwear fits.

What makes a bunion uncomfortable?

The prominent joint can press against the upper of a shoe. A narrow toe box or stiff seam may rub repeatedly, leaving redness or areas of hard skin. The position of the big toe can also change how neighbouring toes share space inside the shoe.

Bunions do not all progress in the same way. Exercises, padding and wider footwear may improve comfort but will not reliably reverse the underlying joint alignment.

A practical footwear checklist

  • Look for a wide and deep toe box, with enough space for your toes to move naturally.

  • Check for a soft upper without a seam pressing directly on the bunion.

  • Choose a secure fastening so your foot is not sliding forward into the front of the shoe.

  • Try shoes on towards the end of the day, when your feet may be slightly larger.

  • Stop using padding if it increases pressure or causes rubbing elsewhere.

What about hard skin over the joint?

Rubbing may produce callus or a corn, but removing hard skin alone does not solve the pressure that caused it. A Foot Health Practitioner can help with routine skin care where appropriate and discuss simple ways to reduce friction. Never cut hard skin with a blade yourself.

If the joint is increasingly painful, red, swollen or affecting how you walk, a GP or HCPC-registered podiatrist can assess the problem and discuss the wider treatment options.
