After Earwax Removal: When Hearing Still Seems Muffled

Wax removal is one part of an assessment

People often book an earwax appointment hoping that hearing will immediately feel normal. That can happen when obstructing wax is the cause, but it is not a guaranteed outcome. For residents in Egham, Egham Green and Staines, the useful question after treatment is whether the original hearing change has actually improved.

Ask what was found

Before the appointment ends, ask whether wax was present, whether removal was complete and whether the practitioner could adequately examine the ear. If treatment stopped because of discomfort or another concern, ask what follow-up is needed. Do not interpret an incomplete procedure as a reason to attempt the remaining wax yourself.

Persistent symptoms deserve follow-up

If hearing remains reduced after earwax treatment, contact your GP. Hearing changes can have causes other than wax, and a hearing assessment or further examination may be appropriate. NHS advice specifically recommends seeing a GP when hearing has not returned after treatment for an ear infection or wax build-up. Repeated removal appointments without reassessing the cause may delay useful help.

Know when the timescale matters

A sudden hearing loss in either ear requires an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111 advice. Hearing that has worsened over a few days or weeks, or hearing loss alongside earache or discharge, also needs urgent advice. Do not wait for a routine follow-up wax appointment in those situations, even if you have had wax blockages before.

Avoid trying to finish the job at home

Keep cotton buds, scoops and other objects out of the canal. Do not use ear drops with a perforated eardrum. Follow the individual aftercare given to you, particularly if you have previous ear surgery or recurrent ear problems. If you wear hearing aids, describe any remaining difficulty and seek advice from your hearing-care provider about the device as needed.
