Toenails Hurt in Shoes? Practical Foot Care Around Egham

You put on a pair of comfortable shoes, but after a short walk one toenail starts to feel sore. It is tempting to blame the shoe immediately. Sometimes footwear is part of the problem; in other cases the nail has become thicker, curved or simply too long for the available space.

Why can a toenail become painful?

Repeated pressure against the end or top of a shoe may irritate the nail and surrounding skin. Thickened nails can develop after repeated minor knocks, with age or with certain nail conditions. A change in colour or thickness does not automatically mean a fungal infection; different causes may look similar.

An edge of the nail pressing into the side of the toe can also be uncomfortable. If you notice redness, swelling, discharge or worsening pain, have it assessed rather than cutting repeatedly into the affected corner.

Three checks before buying different shoes

First, stand in your shoes and check there is room beyond the longest toe. Second, make sure the upper does not press on a thick or raised nail. Third, check whether your foot slides forward and strikes the front of the shoe on stairs or slopes. This can also aggravate tender toe joints or bunions.

Keeping nails at a sensible length, trimming straight across where practical and smoothing sharp corners may help. Do not dig deeply down the sides, force scissors through a thick nail or use sharp instruments to remove painful nail tissue.

When routine professional care can help

Purefeet provides routine foot care including toenail cutting and reduction, checks of uncomfortable nails and advice about friction from everyday footwear. As a Foot Health Practitioner, I can help with suitable routine care and explain when a GP or HCPC-registered podiatrist is the better next step.

If you have been searching for a chiropodist, chiropody treatment or podiatry services, check the qualifications and the type of care offered. Many people need straightforward support with nails and hard skin rather than a specialist procedure.
